The most amazing thing about price guides, be them Orion, McBroom's, Hove,
etc. is that they rarely come close to what is happening with prices on the
Internet venue. Shutterbug perhaps comes the closest in best scale of error,
perhaps in that so many people are probably using it as a readily available
price guide to determine what to pay on the Internet. BUYER BEWARE.
A common theme in my conversations with camera retailers across the country
was that they were amazed at the difference in volume and pricing between the
Internet and retail shops. There were lots of discouraged shop owners! I saw
a lot of stuff that had been sitting on the shelf for a long time. In some
cases they were receptive to knowing what their items would be worth on the
Internet. When I told them the price and their approximate popularity, they
typically seemed to develop a respect for this new venue. Others just got
more resigned to "the poor market."
