I went through the same lessons, Brian.
I also was taught that a 1-12 screen would be best, and first I didn't
believe it. Until I tried it and found out myself that this screen is
the very best for ALL high magnification photography (taking profit
from the air image focusing way).
One more thing: very precise diopter correction for your eyesight,
performed before starting the focusing process, is mandatory. This can
be done with the built-in mechanism of the OM-4, or with the
varimagnifier.
And for those wearing vari- or multifocal glasses (like me): it is
very difficult to use these glasses with the 1-12 screen. If you set
the diopter correction when looking through another spot of the glass
surface than the spot you look through when doing the actual focusing,
everything goes wrong.
I had to abandon using these glasses with high magnification
photography for this reason - I just couldn't focus precisely enough.
Now I use my reading glasses (one focal length) or no glasses at all
and all goes well.
