Subject: [OM] "useful" labeling; advantage of fast macros; IS-10 focus assist in dim light

"It says 'Fix' because 'Attach' or 'Turn screw this way' are too long."

Actually, just the arrow would be enough -- no labeling is required.

The Japanese do a great job of labeling things that don't need labels. There was
a time when the pushbuttons on amplifiers had little icons above them that
showed what happened when the button was up or down! This ignored the fact that
most people interpret pushing a button as activating its associated feature. It
was particularly ludicrous with the power switch!

One advantage of an f/2 macro is that the viewfinder is brighter! This makes it
easier to compose and focus, especially at higher magnifications. At 1:2, there
is a light loss of over one f-stop, simply from the magnification.

If the light is too dim to focus correctly, it (usually) isn't bright enough for
a hand-held exposure, either. So the flash symbol in the IS-10's viewfinder
blinks to warn you, and you can pop up the flash to get its focus assist.

I checked this in my dim bedroom, and found that, below the threshold level for
autofocus, the autofocus light also blinks, indicating the camera isn't focused.
The camera won't fire, and there doesn't seem to be any way to trick the camera
into thinking it's focused.
