Here are two shareware programs that outshine a lot of other
stuff and that are simple enough that you really start
being productive within an hour's time, ... an evening
at worse.

but the site is very slow today ( ???).
There are many excellent "professional" software packages
but they can be so heavy that someone who is trying his hand
at that for a first time could easily get turned off.
If you intend to get involved heavily, it's another matter.
The above two are definitively stamped with excellence
and both enjoy wide spread acceptance.
They often can be found on computer
magazines' CD-ROMs too.
