First, and foremost, I don't know anything about the lens in question.
That said, I can say that I seldom use anything over 360mm for auto
racing, and even then, I get there with a 2x tele-converter. You'll need
to use at least 400 speed film at f8 and f12. I prefer 100, and 400 is
the fastest I will use.
The real issue, I think, is that you will absolutely have to use a
tripod at these focal lengths. I have found there is no room at the
races for a tripod. It is always in the way, it restricts movement, it's
cumbersome to move with, its never pointed the right direction, and
somebody (usually me) is always tripping over it. I have had some
limited use for a monopod, but still prefer to handhold.
What type of auto racing are you shooting? Where are you shooting from?
