About a year ago, Popular Photography did a comprehensive "shoot-out" between
35mm and 2¼" formats. They weren't able to test every lens from every camera (of
course), but their tests showed that, in general, MF lenses are optically
inferior to 35mm lenses.
However...
They aren't _much_ inferior. The net result was that, given the significantly
larger negative size, the 2¼" formats consistently beat 35mm for image quality.
By the way... 35mm is still considered a "miniature" format. And the Leica was
_not_ the first camera to use 35mm (or smaller) film -- it was simply the first
precision camera (of any format).
