Of course the Leica was the introduction of the "small picture camera", the
name was indroduced to destinguish it from "roll film cameras". It's often
the case, that after something new arrived (AF lenses for example or
digital discs), new names for the older things became necessary (MF lenses
or analog discs). "Miniature cameras" were available before the Leica came,
I think.
