I have a 300/4.5 and its one of my favorite lens.  Contrasty and sharp.  You
need a steady tripod usually.  I would recommend it.

PS I've never heard of the Upsilon 400/4.  The only other 400/4 I've seen is
the Tamron 400/4, which, according to this list, is a great lens.
