Great story, Susan. I'm going to assume that this was a roll of
Kodachrome. There are other stories of Kodachromes' legendary latent
image stability. The great color you saw was actually added by the
lab---the Kodachrome process adds dyes to alternate black-and-white
layers, each sensitive to different wavelengths.
Keep the slides in a dark, cool, dry place and they should still look
great in 100 years.
