The original OM-4 (not the OM-4T or OM-4Ti) can suffer from a circuit failure
which results in serious battery drain problems. The circuit from the OM-4T(i)
can be fitted, but I think the consensus is it is not an economical repair.
FWIW, I have an OM-4 that I bought used about 10 years ago, and it's going
strong.
The OM-2S has a reputation as a battery hog as well. One of the problems is
that as originally manufactured the flash ready LED in the finder is powered
by the camera batteries. A fix is available which changes this so the LED is
powered by the flash batteries (it also changes the LED color from green to
red). My OM-2S still has the old (green) LED, and battery life is shorter than
on the OM-4, but still acceptable IMHO. If I don't expect to be using the
OM-2S for a long time I will remove the batteries, as it has continuous drain
even when turned off.
<<Is this a random fault or a major design flaw ?>>
I would call it a minor design flaw....
<< Is there a cure ?
Should I rather not get into the OM system ??? ;-) >>
I wouldn't think this would keep someone from going into the system. There is
a wide assortment of bodies without battery drain problems (OM-1(n), OM-2(n),
OM-3(Ti), OM-4T(i)).
Hope this helps...
