Personally I like the search capabilities of the Nikon list. They seem to get
updated almost in real time. Would they include in their archives the existing
archives, or just start with the current stuff?
On a related (if somewhat off-) topic, out of curiosity, I recently
subscribed to the digest versions of both the Canon and Nikon lists. I have so
enjoyed the past few months I have participated on this list (yes, even
including the off-topic sidebars!) that I was curious if the other lists had a
similar "feel", so I've been reading the digests.
A few interesting things I've noticed... The Nikon list is not as active as I
expected. Less active than this one, I would say, even though you can *only*
subscribe to the digest version - there is no "real time" list (supposedly due
to high traffic). The Canon list appears to have somewhat more activity than
this one (just observations - I haven't done any empirical studies!).
For any of you who subscribe to rec.photo.equipment.35mm, the topics will be
familiar... "How does the Tokinar 15-250 f/1.2 compare to the Nikcan 14-300
f/0.5? Is the Nikcan worth the extra $3,300?" Or, "That new F100 sucks
compared to the EOS 3." I suppose this is to be expected when discussing a
system which is changing and growing with new bodies, lenses, etc. but it does
all get very bland after a while.
I find this list has a much better balance between the technical side of
photography and the technique side. There is also more of a sense of... dare I
say it? "family" with this list. But I should know better than to discuss
anything remotely "psychological"!
So for those of you who get so upset by the off topic ramblings (which, for
the new members, don't occur as often as you might expect based on recent
history. They tend to come and go, you just happened to join in the midst of
one) I would suggest subscribing to one of those "other" lists for awhile. I
think you'll find that this one is much preferable, even with the occasional
OT ramblings...
