Welcome to the list!
<< It's nice to find a place full of people that share the same excellent
taste for quality.
My name is Charles Packard an Olympus OM-1 owner for 23 years.
In that near quarter century I have seen many a 35mm fall by the
wayside, but my Oly
has never ever faltered and I shoot an average of 6-10 rolls a month.
What a camera!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately, it is beginning to show some signs of age. The foam is
turning to goo.Some fungus
(or something) is beginning to cloud the prism.
I have found a place called CamTech, that claims to be an Oly repair and
service center.
Can anyone here recommend them? or another place to perform SAFE and
RELIABLE
service on my OM-1? My Oly has been with me a long time. And I dont want
to risk losing my baby!>>
You won't find better than Camtech. Look into his battery modification, too!
<<I've been thinking about moving up. Can someone fill me in on the
OM-2000. Are there any reviews
available? What is the typical street price or at least the MSRP? Will
it be as sturdy and long lived as my
OM-1?>>
The OM-2000 is built for Olympus by Cosina. It is a budget SLR aimed at
beginners who want a manual camera. Based on having handled the camera, and on
published reviews, it is a good camera for the price, but it is no OM-1. A
decent, used OM-1 will probably be more reliable. Two things you get with the
2000 that are not in the OM-1 are spot metering and double exposure
capability. It also has a faster shutter (1/2000 top speed and 1/125 flash
synch).
<< Also I've run across what seems to be couple of good deals on an OM2 and
OM2S. Can someone
give me some advice about these cameras. (ie Typical problems or short
comings of either type). Or
should I perhaps continue searching for a used OM-3 or OM-4.The ti
versions are priced a bit out of my reach and I'm 6' 4".>>
I own an OM-2S and really love it. My main concern would be circuit
availability. I like the program mode for family snapshots - I can hand the
camera to anyone and if they can focus they'll get some nice shots (and maybe
even let me get in some of the pictures!). The spot metering in manual mode is
great, too. Once you've used spot metering you'll wonder how you ever got by
without it. The only drawback is that it only gets to 3.5fps with the motor
drive. Not a concern to me, since I don't have a motor drive. Also, if you do
a lot of flash work keep a spare set of batteries handy - the OM-2S uses the
camera's batteries to power the internal flash-ready LED.
