My bungled up reply to the "OM-10 vs OM-G" question probably doesn't
add much to my credibility (my sincere apologies for the incorrect
info. on the beeper ON/OFF). Anyway, I'll try to help with the above.
First, much like with used cars, what's really important is not the
camera's chronological age, but its "mileage". If an OM-1 body looks
barely used, than it is likely to outlast a more recent, but more
heavily used OM-1n.
Second, here are a few more differences not yet mentioned by others:
- OM-1n has a reshaped wind lever;
- OM-1n has a special contact which allows it to work with the Oly
recordata backs;
- OM-1 can only accept hot shoe 1, i.e. you cannot use any of the two
Oly TTL Auto Connectors/TTL Cords with it for off-camera flash
(of course, any ISO/aftermarket off-camera techniques, e.g. duo-sync
cords, PC cords, etc. are perfectly ok).
Third, there are some internal differences between the OM-1 and OM-1n.
Certain parts for the former are getting scarce, and so some repair
outlets refuse to service it (e.g. CRIS in Chandler, AZ). This seems
not to be a problem at Photosphere in Dallas, TX, or with our own
esteemed John H. (aka Mr. Zuiko.com :-)).
Finally, some of the local repair-guys/friends claim that the OM-1
was better made, and in the OM-1n Oly cut corners to make the latter
cheaper to manufacture and more profitable. FYI, in the past John H.
vehemently denied this rumor, so pls take it with a grain of salt.
Cheers,
/Gary Schloss.
