actually, I believe that they do. it is not that they make the glass
transmit more light but that they prevent some of the light from being
reflected at the surface. air-glass interfaces are terrible for
reflections. coating-glass interface is much better and air-coating
interface is much better, hence a coated lens transmits more light
than an uncoated one.
