One poster mentioned that an Olympus winder he bought suffered from
"acid damage" inside the battery case.
If the previous owner used regular carbon-zinc cells (idiot!), this is a
serious problem. However, if he used alkaline cells, the damage is not
"acid" at all, and is usually fixable.
The crust that forms can be largely (sometimes even completely) removed
with household ammonia. I've been able to repair a number of products in
which the alkaline battery leaked.
