He was influenced by Peter Stackpole's Leica photography of civil engineering
projects. It lead to his use of a Contax II with 50mm f/3.5 Tessar and
publication of "My First Ten Weeks With A Contax," in Camera Craft, January,
1936. Given that the Contax II wasn't officially introduced until 1936 at a
cost of $250-300 (ca. $2,950 to 3,500 in 1998 dollars), I would speculate that
he got his camera as a pre-production model and gratis at that.
Nancy Newhall said he used it on the Sierra Club High Trip in summer, 1936.
