I haven't owned the Tokina 90/2.5 macro, so I'll trust what Richard's
catalogue says over heresay of others. However, I *do* own the
Tamron 90/2.5 macro with 49mm filter threads and I do not believe
it is a floating element lens design. when focusing closer with the helicoid,
the entier lens moves as a unit closer to hte subject. There is no internal
movement that would be required for a floating element lens.
I have also handled the new Tamron 90/2.8 and it didn't appear to be a
floating element lens either, and the tamron rep I was talkign to at the time
told me it wasn't. he also said that the only difference between
the the 49mm and 55mm filter thread 90/2.5's was, in addition to
outer packaging and filter threads, that the 55mm filter version used
an improved coating, but otherwise they were the same optic. both
are multicoated, by the way.
re: hiking with a mamiya Press-- I use the older press deluxe that isn't
as heavy as a super 23, but to those who asked me in email, I don't backpack
with this stuff, ie no overnight packing, just day hikes. I do carry
a large backpack though on day hikes-- camera equipment + water + wool sweater
etc., comes out to about 20lbs.
