A reversing ring lets you put the lens on "backwards". It has a filter thread
on one side, and a lens mount on the other that mounts onto the camera. If I
understand the principle, when a "normal" lens is designed, it is designed to
perform best when the subject is further from the lens than the film plane is.
In macro work, this often is not the case, so reversing the lens should
provide somewhat better optical quality. When you reverse the lens you are
working with a manual diaphgram, of course.
