"My first reaction is 'aargh'. On the other hand, Kodak lens cleaner used to
have a distinct odor of ammonia. Not sure whether it had alcohol in it like
the Windex."
Windex is fine for cleaning optical glass; a mixture of Windex and distilled
water may be better. The active ingredient is apparently ammonium
carbonate.
More important is to use Kimwipes or other tissues with no grit and little
lint. Randomly chosen paper towels, etc., are not satisfactory. Lens
tissue isn't that great either; traditionally it's used for cleaning the
tiny lenses on microscopes, and it's not so good for anything bigger than an
eyepiece. The sheets are too small and too thin.
