When I really want to know, I use a microscope. It is a great way to
eliminate all the variables that this message thread brought up. If you don't
have one, you might be able to use one at a school lab. BTW, this works best
for slides, since neg's will get scratched while holding them down.
Last week I was looking at shots through a 85 mm f/2 and they were a bit less
sharp than I expected. Turns out the helical is focusing past infinity. So I
reshot the subject with attention to that fact. Since the 85 mm was $60, I
can live with that.
