I think your test was pretty good for our purposes.
I must admit, I expected to see more difference than I did. Makes me even
more impressed with the 85-250.
I can see differences in slides using 8-10 X loupes.
In John Shaws latest book, he concludes that publishers use 4X, so he also
uses 4X. I just picked up a 10x a week ago and WOW, what a difference. I can
only imagine what 15X would show, probably useless.
Thanks for the test results. I would love to see the
85-250 compared to other zooms, eg 100-200, 50-250, 65-200. Do you have any
of
these + some time on your hands??? george
Nope, I only have a couple 35-70 f3.6's and my old 75-150. I am planning on
testing the 35-70 against the 35f2 & 50f1.2 as well as more with the 85-250
against the 135 f2.8 & 180 f2.8. (Although, one of these days, I plan on
replacing the 85 &135 with a new 100 f2). I just want to satisfy in my mind
how much I am loosing with the zooms @ f8 & f11. I only want to use them for
landscape/scenic sunsets etc. shots (love the cropping ability). I'll stick
with primes for wildlife, getting fur SHARP will put the best lens / technique
to it's highest test.
PS I have done some tests of several lenses at wide open and 1 stop down if
anyone's interested. >>
I would love to see your results. I think I shoot way to often at wide open
with my 500 & 300 @ f4.5. DOF is so shallow at close distances, it makes
focusing critical. What did you find?
