Must have been a damp cupboard, I have never experienced this
problem with any lens (in Melbourne mainly, with a few excursions to the
tropics).

I heard from a camers mechanic that when he discovers this problem
he ALWAYS replaces the full run of wire because the top end is usually
affected to some degree if the bottom is.
