My son has the manual so I could scan that for you, but this is how it works:
Focusing is by zone or measurement.
Metering is automatic while you have it set to 'A'; this means that the
meter adjusts the aperture while keeping the shutter speed at 1/200s. If
you set an aperture yourself, normally for flash use, the shutter speed
changes to 1/40s. It's as simple as that.
