My mom started off by buying an OM system in the seventies, 1/2, 28 2.8,
50 3.5 135 2.8, 50 1.4. Later on a few years ago I bought a used 4
which I liked for its spot metering, however, when my mom saw it she
wanted it, so I gave it to her. I got some amazing deals on an OM-1 and
OM -2. I've since decided that they are far superior to the later
editions of OM gear. They appear to be much more solid, do not suffer
from battery drain, and most importantly, they have quieter shutters.
The other day I drove all the way to the San Fernando valley to look at
a group of used gear being sold, which appeared to be a bargain. OM-4,
35 2.8, 50 1.8, 135 2.8, 300 4.5, t-20 all for $750. I was sure I would
buy it before I got there. However, the camera was much noisier than my
OM-1, and all the lenses had really "clicky" aperture rings (OM lenses
usually seem to have smooth aperture rings). The OM-4 just seemed so
tacky compared with the OM-1, and the viewfinder was so grainy. So I
passed on the deal. What I would like now is an OM-2n in black if any
one wants to sell me one. Of course my OM-2 is with my mom, so that is
why I am looking for a new one. It's the noisier shutter that screws up
the other bodies for me.
