Yes, I know of silica gel in craft stores as an alternative, but the stuff I've
found has two drawbacks (so far):
1. It's not small pellets, but rather almost a "sand," which, even enclosed in
a finely-woven fabric bag, gives me the heebie-jeebies, since it could "dust
out" and get into the cameras/lenses; and
2. It has no indicator built-in to indicate when it's exhausted, requiring some
guesstimation on your part.
Perhaps these aren't insuperable obstacles, but to date they've given me pause.
