How do you know it wasn't a zoom? All of the Sony's I've seen have a zoom, but
due to the small size of the CCD, the zoom/focus movement is entirely internal.
The digital zoom models extend the range of the normal zoom, but do degrade the
quality quite noticeably, especially if viewed on an S-Video output. I normally
leave the digital zoom turned off, which reduces the 72X zoom to a 36X (or
thereabouts). Still plenty long enough, and too long for most handheld work,
even with image stabilization.
Another cool feature of the new Sony's is a night mode, which allows shooting
in *total* darkness, presumably using an infrared sensitive CCD mode. Good for
some very interesting effects - I was amazed how well it works.
