Has anyone on the list tried to sell pictures to agencies either in the US
or UK. If so have they had any success, how do you go about finding a
suitable agency, how is it best to approach them, is it worth it in the
long run. I have been thinking of finding a specialist niche (maybe macro!)
that isn't popular with many professionals.
I have spoken to the professionals running the course(s) I have attended,
they don't hold out much hope, they say you have to present a large
portfolio of say 200 slides tuned to the needs of the agency. You would
also have to check what format would be acceptable, some only deal with
medium or large format, others do accept 35mm. You may spend much time
traipsing round several agencies getting nowhere, or they may just hang on
to your work and never reply.
I know its very difficult trying to make a living as a photographer,
obviously the many (budding) professionals in the world must have tried
this route. However there is a huge demand for quality images in the vast
number of magazines etc published each day, many of these are stock photos.
I'm not optimistic about this but I'd like to give it a try.
