Straps! You don't need no steenkeen straps, señor!

What I do when I get a new body:

1) Immediately discard the split-rings that go through the strap holes.
2) Then get some nice heavy parachute cord or round nylon boot-lace that is
just the size of the strap holes.
3) Thread about 4 inches through the right (winder-side) hole and tie a
double-half-hitch to itself.
4) Stick your second and third fingers through the loop. (Leave first
finger free for shutter release.)
5) Adjust the loop for a snug fit.
6) Tie a second double-half-hitch with the free end.
7) Cut off excess and heat-seal with a knife warmed over a match.
8) Repeat for left side, possibly leaving it a bit looser, since you'll
probably only "dangle" it from the right side.

Now your camera is "attached" to your hand! You can walk around with it
securely, and whip it up to eye level in an instant!

This doesn't work too well with heavy telephotos or zooms, but then you
simply clip the dreaded camera strap onto your new finger loops and hang it
on your neck like everyone else does.

One of the nicest compliments I've gotten in photography wasn't over a
picture. I was giving a class in nature photography, and one of my students
said she enjoyed watching me shoot because I handled the camera "like it
was an extension of [my] body." That wouldn't be possible without finger
loops!
