I only use a filter when I want the effect the filter provides.

I know many people advocate a skylight filter for protection 
purposes but I can notice the slight warming effect such filters have 
so only use one when I want warming.  Besides, if I am using print 
film I know the processor is likely to dial in their own idea of 
warming unbidden 8-(
