This is a big and heavy lens that isn't as sharp as a prime. Compared to
the 300/4.5 you might be a little disappointed, I couldn't get it to
resolve on the feathers of swans and ducks I tested with. However color
seperation was very minimal.
For sports work, it is a decent lens and since you will probably be shooting
something like Fuji 800 (pushed to 1600 is a sports photographers standard),
it is ~just~ fast enough for most images.
My recommendation is to try the lens. I personally rejected it after trying
to use it with standard 1-series focusing screens. Not a good idea. If I
had a 2-4 screen back then, I would have kept the lens.
