They exist allright it is just that for a virus to work you have to
have executable code in memory. An email message is not executable
code, though an attachment could be.
You could get a virus through an attachment to an email mesage but
not from the message itself. I believe you would have to cause such
an attachment to be executed to get infected, just receiving it won't
infect your system - as far as I know that is.
For instance, if you receive a message with a MS word file as an
attachment that has one of those macro viruses in it, you are safe so
long as you do not open the attachment.
I am sure Garth and others can correct me if i am mistaken on any
points.
