Perhaps because:
1) It contains a low dispersion element. (Still not as expensive as the ED
element in, for example, the 100 mm f/2.0, or the Canon FD L series.
2) It couldn't hope to attain manufacturing volumes necessary to gain the
profit of say, a 50mm f/1.8.
