A lot of photographers would shoot the action stuff with 35mm (given the
quality of today's film) and save MF for formal portraits.
If I was to do that kind of work in 35mm, I would want a camera with fast
autofocus, high synch speed, and good flash options. A Nikon F5, N90s, or
Canon EOS1 would come to mind. I would couple that with the
highest-quality, fixed aperture zoom the maker offers, like a 35-70 2.8, or
similar.
In MF, the new Pentax 645N autofocus would be hard to beat. Alternately,
the Mamiya 645s are about as fast-handling as you can get in medium format.
