Yes, it will not correct the average, but the brightest (highlight) spot
or the darkest (shadow) spot of all the spots in memory.

The best would, to decide before the first spotmetering was taken, do I
want to have an metering based on the darkest (shadows) or brightest
(highlight) areas in my frame?
Then you´re going to take spotmeterings from the respective area. Take
as many spots as you think it needs to cover all the dark or bright
parts of the pictures you want to get rendered right with detail (either
not completly black nor completly burned out). After that you press the
highlight or shadow button and all the areas, you took measurements
from, will have details.
