Sorry, I must put in my three penorth (old english for threepenny worth).
Yes, the protrait lens of about 85mm gives a "normal" perspective,
because that approximates to the human eye's angle of acceptance for
normal focus. Your eyes can sort of see almost to 180 degrees if you
concentrate, but you do cannot normally focus at that angle off-centre.
Therefore, if the eye normally only focusses on scenes which subtend
about 30 degrees, that is why the perspective provided by an 85mm lens
will seem normal.
The longer the lens, the further away you must be to take the shot to get
the same number of faces (for example) in to the frame to fill it; by the
same token, the further away you are, the less significant the depth of
the scene, relative to your taking distance, and the less the apparent
distortion - no big noses at the front of the group, no tiny heads at the
back.
Now, since I am interested in the practicalities of wider angles, who
will help me with my new research and donate a super-wide for my use (I
only have a 24mm)? :-)
