I have a Gitzo 220, which is non-compact and only has 3 segments (2
dials to extend). I disliked the 4 segment compact version, because I
like to go to work as fast as possible. With the Gitzo's, you can
reverse your center column for close to ground work.

My Gitzo weighs 2 kg and it can hold 6 kg (5 if you mount the Manfrotto
3-way head). Gitzo's website says a Carbon compact is 1.5 kg. It's
only half a kilogram ! I will not pay 3 times as much for that kind of
weight difference.
