OK, here is my summary of different films from this thread a while back.
Kodachrome
25/64/200. Fine grain, very stable over long time. It's stability is further
helped by storing it at 4°C
Kodachromes display snow very well. In my opinion, they have a green/brown
clour setup. Good for foilage shots. The 25 film is more contrasty than 64.
Neither film is good for times greater than 1 second.
200 has a bit of grain.
Velvia
50 ASA. Colour saturation. Time stability is not really known.
Some think it doesn't faithfully repoduce foliage, yet John Shaw uses it
heaps. Others said it makes green so sweet that other films cannot come
close. Can be pinkish on snow shots.
Excellent resolving power and grain.
Use a 1B or 81B in bright sunlight as it may show a bluish tinge.
Development affects it greatly. Go to a good lab.
Push 1 stop no problem.
Ektachtome
Now is saturated versions. Too saturated for some likings, but very
different from years ago. SW is like adding an 81B filter. Grain is fine.
Kodaks attempt to regain from the Velvia/Provia/Astia.
Astia
Warm film, ideal for portrait shots. One person quoted that it was designed
to be slightly pastel, ideal for portaits and high lattitude places where
the lighting is VERY contrasty. It really handles the bright rock highlights
and stucco finished buildings well. Not much more comment on it.
Provia
100 ASA. Not colour saturated. Fine grained. Not much comment was given on
this film.
Sensia
100/200/400 ASA. Amateur film. Doesn't push well. An amateur provia. Film
base designed for projection. Can be quite good. But it isn't a pro film. It
is too cool.
Sensia II
100/200/400 ASA. Hard to tell Sensia II from Astia, which would make sense
if they are the same emulsion.
No great comment about any other manufacturer.
For me the result is I'm trying Velvia.
Sensia II is my 400 ASA film. I've been a Kodachrome boy till now. Generally
I like colour saturation, and I'm looking forward to finishing my first roll
of Velvia. It costs more after processing than Kodachrome.
Extachrome S and SW are worth a look. If doing people, I'll go for Astia.
I'll probably say goodbye to Kodachrome except for snow shots.
Thanks for all the answers to my questions.
