OK, I'll take the risk of repeating myself here:
I've taken many, many macro-piccies in the 1:2 - 1:1 lifesize range with
apertures as small as f/32 with my ex-Vivitar 100/2.8. At 1:1 and f/32 on
this lens there's full extension, 100 mm which computes it all to an
effective aperture of f/64 (diffraction, I know, but I needed the depth of
field).
Equipment has always been OM2Sp, OM4 or OM4Ti. Flashes T32, single or
double, always with cable(s), flash on the side(s) on tripod(s). Film has
been 50 or 100 ISO, slides.
With these setup(s) I've never encountered any problems, other than that I
routinely have had to undercompensate 2/3, probably due to my subjects,
don't really know why. (This is fishy!)
I don't know if this clears the confusion (probably don't) and I'm the first
to admit that this isn't the same setup as your mates ring-flash, but as
said before; it worked for me. But then others of this list (Doug) has other
experiences.
Robert, I'm curious if your friend also has to undercompensate in order to
get correctly, not overexposed pictures.
