I thankfully haven't lost the MD cap from any of my OM's, and to make sure
it stays that way I secure them with a small (2 cm) piece of black
electrical tape. Since the bodies are black, it doesn't show, and the tape
does not leave a sticky residue.

Olympus stopped making these caps available for replacement (according to
info posted earlier on this list) a while ago. I'm running into the same
phenomena with used OMs for sale around where I live -- the MD caps seem to
be missing most of the time.
