These would have to be averages, of course. Perhaps [((beginning of year) +
(end of year))/2] would be sufficient, although throughout the 70s and into the
early 80s, I'd probably want to average 'em at least monthly (too much variance
and volatility otherwise).

You need a CPI/RPI deflation index. I'll check Web sources and see if there's
anything out there with historical information for the U.S. -- otherwise, I'll
have to head over to the government repository library at the U. of Alberta and
check there.
Why me? Oh, in a past life, I got a couple of economics degrees (don't ask...).
