George,
The T-8 was one of the last flashes that I aquired. I have done
minimal macro with it. I use it and the large refelctor and 90/2 when
doing photos of my nieces. I tie one or two of the T-45s (depending on
background) in with the TTL cords. I find it does a great job of soft
lighting the faces.

You will have to experiment with this one. I do not have enough T-8 time
in to really say. Personally I would do this with the T-10 and cross-pol
filter. On flat objects the ring will be visible in your photos. On the
irregular surfaces it will probably be acceptable.
I do have a extra cross-pol if you have a T-10.

It should be great with plants. And if you mist them the ring
reflections in the droplets could be a cool touch. The only insect shots
I have done were pre-Olympus.

I usually go with the TTL-auto mode. I shoot mostly with OM-4T(i)s. I
have several other bodies, but they just kind of sit on the shelf. And
on occasion I will shoot with a 3 inplace of the 4.

I have both of the battery packs. But unless you find them used, I think
they are overpriced. If you are handy with a soldering iron, making one
is no big deal. If you build your own, put two connectors on it. This
will prep you if you ever buy the T-28 twin flash. Each head has a
connector and on/off switch for the lamps.
