I just came back last night from my 13-day trip to Tokyo where my parents
live. I just want to say a few words today in light of what I have read so
far of the digests.
I shopped twice at Yodobashi Camera (the main store in Shinjuku) and
visited the Olympus Service Center twice at Olympus Plaza at Ogawamachi.
As far as I can tell, Japanese camera stores including Yodobashi sell
Olympus cameras and other SLRs similarly to the American counterparts.
Yodobashi corresponds to B&H in the US except that Yodobashi does not do
any mail-order business nor deal with any second-hand photo gear. They
have a very good selection of OM (3 OM bodies plus lenses and accessories).
I bought a few accessories and an 85mm/2 ($319 at a current exchange
rate). There were stacks of OM-3Ti and OM-4Ti brochures (printed in July
(?), 1997) in Japanese. The Olympus brochures of their digital cameras, in
particular, have a woman on their covers and I would say that Olympus in
Japan must spend more yen in producing these than Olympus America does of
their Oly brochures. Besides these brochures, I also picked up their OM
system price list (dated 1996), a lens group brochure, and a macro-photo
brochure.
I have spoken on the phone with a woman at the Marketing group of the
Imaging Business Division at Olympus and will be sending a compilation of
OM wish lists plus my OM-preference vote summary shortly. There were too
many of wish list e-mails for me to finish making them into a few text
files to be sent as attachments. The woman said that they can read English,
so I am not going to translate them. I had wanted to present them in
person, but since they would not meet me, I did not spend my precious time
in making the compilation while I was there. (I had transferred all the
relevant e-mails transferred on to my CTX EzBook.
I went to Japan by Delta, and am anxiously waiting for a word re. my two
pieces of luggage, one of which contains all my purchases in Japan, which
were lost in transit from Portland, Oregon to BWI (Baltimore-Washington
International). When I get my luggage, I'll have a few more to say about
the brochures and the Oly stuff I purchased.
