Hi John:
<< This time I just want to take pictures using some great gear, hopefully
Olympus. Thanks for providing some food for thought. >>
Thanks for the kind words. I refuse to treat equipment like it is fine china.
It's a picture taking instrument and if it gets too worn in use to have a
great resale value, then that's "use depreciation." But now that use
depreciation with OLY equipment will really seem steep. Maybe too steep to
actually use the stuff in the field as a biologist! I may have to consider
myself too poor to even use an OLY. My worst fears are finding that something
needs repair. Those costs will kill you.
Don't look for the kind of prices that I'm reporting from normal channel
dealers. I have a finely tuned route which takes me to outlets that I know
are, from time to time, are worth the effort! In my experience looking for 35
mm equipment, Minolta equipment has some great used bargains, Canon is second
(sometimes first), Pentax third and Nikon is rarely a bargain. The only good
deals on OLY in the last four months have been a 135 mm f/2.8 (asked $65) and
a 35 mm f/2.8 that probably went for under $50. (I considered both of those
too high given the same equipment from competing manufacturers). I got, as I
reported, the T-20 for $8.95 and a IS-3DLX went for $189. But that has been
it for a metro area of 1.1 million. Meanwhile a camera store catering to pros
asks $299 for a 28 mm f/2.0 (10) and $250 for a 35 mm f/2.0 (9+). No way,
hosay.
