They are not solid, but mainly hollow. Hence the cracks...
You can open the thing from downside (carefully removing glued 'soft'
plastic and disassemble, put epoxy in and re-assemble it. It is a
difficult job. I did it about 8 years ago, and I still use the same
shoes... Actually it was shoe-1 and 2 (for the 310 flash) I treated
this way, I hope the 3 and 4 are mechanically the same...
