I love the convenience of zooms, and acknowledge their limitations.
If one looks at a lot of tests, most midrange zooms (not the cream of the
crop, like the Zuiko 35-80/2.8, Nikkor 35-70/2.8, Canon 28-70/2.8 L, etc.)
vary greatly in quality (SQF) across the F/stop range. Most zooms (and
almost all older zooms) do not "come alive" until f/8 - f/11. Stay in that
range and they're capable of 11x14 enlargements (given sufficient contrast
between light/tone/color/film). Use them wide open, and they will
disappoint in terms of conventional image quality.
What I would love to find is a 28-70 and 70-200 that would be very
compact AND sharp (Okay, sacrifice lens speed & close focusing)...
