Hi there. Wrote the good folks at Varta once again for information on how to store mercury batteries. Here is the relevant portion of their reply: "Dear Mr. Wood, The product manager told me: Do not freeze batteries! You can storage them into a refrigerator ( = + 6° C ) and this kind of storage reduce the self discharge. The self discharge for mercury batteries is by normal storage ( = 20°C - 50 - 600midity ) approx. 2 % / year." Thankfully, I've never yet frozen any of mine. FWIW.
