My impression of this Tokina AT-X zoom was negative. Admittedly, it's
a conclusion based on a sample space of 1 :-). However, it is supported
by this lens' consistently low prices (I paid US$69 for mine) compared
to its competition. This is a shame, as I'm usually quite enthusiastic
about Tokina glass, esp. the AT-X series.
28-85mm is my preferred FL range on a zoom, so I'm greatly disappointed
with Olympus for failing to release their 28-85mm F3.5-4.5 AF zoom in
manual focus version. Never the less, there are some decent alternatives
out there. Here is a quick rundown:
- Kiron 28-85mm F2.8-3.8 (1-touch, variofocal) - that's what I use
these days; there is also a 28-105mm F3.2-4.5 version;
- Vivitar 28-85mm F2.8-3.8 (same as above Kiron, but in matte finish);
- Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm F2.8-3.5 (1-touch, variofocal) - a much
celebrated performer;
- Tokina 28-85mm F4 (2-touch, older RMC lens) - Doug Nowlin praises it;
- Sigma 28-80mm F3.5-4.5 (2-touch, theta-series) - I have yet to test it;
- Tamron 28-80mm F3.5-4.2 (2-touch, SP-series) - I have yet to lay my
hands on one for a quick test, but most SP lenses are worth a try.
Good hunting,
