Rather than taking it back, he can sell it to me :)
If his exposure was more than 6-10 seconds, the stars would trail giving the
"football" images. The blue halos I can't explain. I have seen colored
halos around stars when delibertly out of focus - a neat effect if that is
what you are trying to do. It helps highlight the star's color.
I'd suggest your friend take a few tripod mounted daylight pictures to
evaluate the lens. Stars are wickedly difficult to photograph well and
require special techniques and support equipment.
