Hello
Canon's unique mirror is not a system-wide feature. There have been two
EOS models with the 'pellicle mirror' - the EOS RT (now discontinued)
and the EOS 1N RS. The mirror is semi-transparent and remains in place
as the photograph is taken - 2/3rds of the light entering the lens
gets to the film plane, the other 1/3rd goes to the viewfinder.
Advantages are no viewfinder blackout during exposure, almost-silent
operation (as quiet as a Leica - no kidding), much faster response
time from pressing the button to the shutter firing, and the potential
for extremely fast motordrive operation (10 fps on the EOS 1N RS).
Disadvantages are the the 1/3rd stop light loss which means expensive
fast lenses are essential, and the fact that any dust on the mirror will
degrade picture quality. The viewfinder brightness on the 1N RS (I've
never handled an RT) is fine in all but the very lowest light - as
long as the lens is a fast one.
Hope this is informative.
regards
Duncan
