Jim,
The lens does not really flare out at the end like the fast teles, its the hood
that makes it look that way. My sole "complaint" is the lens is a bit on the
heavy side, but its not a problem. All I pack now is a 24mm, 50mm Macro, and
the 80-200 zoom with the OM-2n for backup. It is large enough to handle well
(my hands are on the large side). Mounting on a tripod is done via the
baseplate socket - nothing special at all. The cost is a bit much to choke
down. The Yen exchange rate was around 105 per U
SD when I bought mine, so I paid more than $1100 <gulp!>. I can no tell any
difference between a photo taken with the zoom vs a fixed length lens. Its
good. For the same money, you can probably cover the whole range and have $$$$
left over but then you could spend all your time changing lenses...... It
works for me and if I had it to do over again, I would without hesitation.
